The Importance of Performance

What a lofty sounding title that is! But the reasons we perform are quite practical everyday reasons!

  1. It gives us an opportunity to share our music with others!

This is important, music is meant to be shared, it is part of the human expression. It’s a form of communication and an excellent way to express emotion. Music connects us.

2. Performance teaches us life skills

Performance stretches us in so many ways! We learn how to prepare and present. Today your student might be preparing and presenting ‘Row, Row, Row your Boat’ but give them a few years, they may be presenting to their entire office and drawing on the confidence they build now.

Performances help us grow as people. It can show us where our insecurities are and gives us opportunity to identify and overcome them. The nerves and excitement, that performance often bring, let us learn to manage and harness those feelings. It also teaches us to fail and get back up.

3. Performance is playing the game

Imagine practicing taking shots or shooting hoops for the whole year, but never once playing a game of hockey or basketball. While practicing will still have it’s own benefits your student is missing out if they never perform. Being a musician is both personal and public, don’t miss out on half the experience!
