The Role of a Piano Parent

What’s a Piano Parent?

You might have heard of Soccer Moms or Hockey Family’s but chances are you haven’t heard of Piano Parents.  But you my friend are a Piano Parent. (Or possibly voice parent!)

It’s obvious how parents are involved in their children’s sport success- They drive kids and equipment to many practices and games, Fuel them with snacks and cheer their team from the sidelines. But what does a Piano Parent do to help their child succeed in music? I’m really glad you asked! Here is a starter list for How To Be a Piano Parent.

#1.  Drive them to ‘Practice’ – That is their weekly music class! If kids miss class they lose momentum. Make it a priority to get them and their books to as many weekly classes as possible. During the drive help your child get in the right head space. We work hard in class and are always being challenged. If they are tired from the day of school let them rest or decompress during the drive. If they’ve got lots of energy listen to some music, or talk about their pieces. This gets them ready to engage in class.

#2.  Help them Train –by practicing at home every day! A good musician is a trained musician, the ones who put in the effort I can usually tell who’s prepared by how they walk into our studio room. Kids who have practiced daily at home are confident and excited to show me what they can do. Kids who haven’t touched their instrument since last week are unsure about which books they need, where their hands should go and how to join in. They might even wonder if they’re able to be a musician. Give them confidence by helping them train during the week.

#3. Attend ‘Games’ – Musicians don’t have tournaments but we do perform throughout the year. Mark performances on the calendar so you don’t end up double booked! Cheer them on as they practice at home and perform in public. Invite family and friends to hear them. Let them know that you value their musicianship!

Thank you for helping your child succeed and for being a piano parent!
