What’s Happening at Selke Music School?

School Wide Challenges

Prize Box – For every 20 days a student practices at home they earn a prize ticket, which they can redeem on Prize Box Day. Prize box day happens once a semester so help your student earn their tickets by reminding them to practice every day.

Practice Challenge Certificate – Each student should try to earn this certificate! This award goes to every student who has a daily practice record of 90% or more through out the entire year. At our final performance those who have succeeded will receive their certificate! In the Notebook you received there is a practice tracker page close to the back. Parents, you need to initial each day your student practices to make sure it counts toward the challenge!

Music Reading Challenge Certificate – Each student should try to earn this certificate! This award goes to the every student who has sight-read a minimum number of songs required for their level. (Level 1-50 songs, Level 2-100 songs, Level 3 -150 songs, Level 4 – 200 songs, Level 5-250 songs). The songs don’t have to be at their level of difficulty, the goal of this challenge to get kids reading notation! There are Music Library books for them to take home, read (play through) and bring back. These don’t have to be perfect but they should be played well. Make sure they write the name of their song in the Reading Log in their notebooks! Please make sure there are no repeat songs. Every week I’ll pick one of their songs to listen to in class, if it’s not up standard it gets removed from the list!

Composer of the Month Challenge– Does your student love composing their own music? Then this is a challenge for them! This is a monthly challenge, I will share a video of the ‘Composer of the Month’ on Selke Music Schools Facebook/Instagram and YouTube. Students can submit one composition per month. They can submit it to me by bringing a written copy (sheet music) to class, or you can send me a video of them playing it either through Marco Polo, Facebook Messenger, or any other way you can send it! Each composition should have name and be at least 8 measures long.

Matthew Teichrib Composer of the Year Award – This is the ultimate composing award and the winner of this year long competition will win a medal! The Student who wins this medal will have submitted at least 3 noteworthy compositions for consideration to the composer of the month challenge and will have won composer of the month at least once. Pieces can be submitted either by sheet music handed in or by video clip.

Performer of the Year – Do you have a rising star? Encourage them to perform through this challenge. The student who wins this award will have performed at least 3 times throughout the year. Performances that count toward this are any Selke Music School Recital, concert or event where they perform, performance videos shared to Selke Music School Facebook/Instagram and shared with at least 5 friends/ family, local festivals or competitions, any event where you have been asked to perform (even as background music) and at home concerts. You must let me know before the event so we can talk it over and make sure it counts!

For at home concerts, your child must play at least 3 performance ready songs (this is not just another practice!). They should invite friends and family (you can do it through zoom too!), have them set up chairs and create a ‘concert’ atmosphere. If you wish you can serve refreshments. Have them choose their clothing. They can get ‘dressed up’ or wear a costume, (for instance if they are performing Disney songs they could dress as a Disney princess!). They should be able to talk about their pieces a bit – why they chose them, what they want to feel or listen for as they play. At the end they should take a bow! Make sure you record your at home concert so I can see it too!

Musician of the Year – This trophy is the highest honour that can be won at Selke Music School. The student who wins it must have received both the Practice and Literacy Certificates, additionally they will have a minimum of five songs at their current level memorized. They will have performed at least five times, including twice at a S.M.S event and at least once at a local festival where they won their class. They will have attended in person or virtually at least three musical performances (such as a symphony, local concert, or main stream musician’s concert). They must have won at least one composer of the month challenge and participated in at least five. They will have collaborated at least once with another musician either in performance or composition. They will consistently demonstrate an enthusiasm for music and learning. This award is discretionary, so it may not be awarded at all if the spirit of the award is not met. If more than one student meets the requirement the winner will be chosen at my discretion or whomever I have asked to adjudicate.
